Vikings Blood Mead Recipe

The mead recipe is one of the oldest recipes written by Archbishop Olaus Magnus in 1520. He wrote that it can be drunk for up to 8 days, but the longer it is kept, the better and purer it will be.

The main ingredient in the traditional Viking Mead recipe is yeast, honey, and water, and it is impossible to make it without these ingredients.

However, traditional mead may contain 8 – 20% ABV which tastes like honey. This alcoholic beverage was very popular with the Vikings. Also dedicated an entire building for this drink.

The halls dedicated to Viking Mid were the main venues for socializing, eating, and drinking. Simply put, these takeaways were created for drinking.

How did they get the Viking ingredients in antiquity?

One of the main ingredients in making mead is easily available. Honey was found in the southern part of the Scandinavian countries, and the Vikings knew about beekeeping.

They made a coiled dome of straw where bees made beehives. Then they would collect honey from the hive. The beehive was kept in a cloth to collect honey so that as much honey as possible could be extracted.

They occasionally put the bees in the water to collect each drop of honey. If you want to make the highest quality mead then you need pure raw honey.

However, if the honey is not pure, then low-quality mead will be produced. But you will enjoy both Viking Mead.

Traditional Flavors and Additions

In addition to the ingredients that could grow in their homeland, they needed access to some more ingredients. However, these ingredients have been easily accessed due to their wide trade.

For the traditional flavors, they used very common fruits which are very easily available including cherry, raspberry, alderberry, hawthorn berry, rowanberry, and crabble.

Some wildflowers were used, notably cover, violet, dandelion, and rose hips. If you have never made a mead or fermented drink before, use only the petals and refrain from using greens as it will cause bitterness.

Wild Yeast

You may think that yeast and yeast nutrients are now easily available from stores. But how did the Vikings get this luxury?

But the reality is that the Vikings did not know what yeast was and that yeast was needed to make mead. They collected honey and fruits and collected yeast from their meadows.

However, they made mead without knowing that they were collecting yeast.

1. Pour honey and water into a glass jar and strain it.

2. Then with the help of a stick, dissolve the honey well in water.

3. Add your favorite fruits like dried or fresh fruits like berries, grapes, and plums.

4. When it is well mixed, place the jar in a cool, dark place. However, the ideal temperature for keeping the jar is 70 degrees Fahrenheit or 21 degrees Celsius.

Then fill the jar with half the water. And close the mouth of the jar.

Then place the jar in a dark, dry place. Leave it for a month.

Your mead is made but it is still very sweet and less alcoholic. Pour it into another container to make it longer and make the mead more alcoholic.

Change the container twice more in two to three months to get clear mead.

In the next step, pour the mead into the bottle. One-gallon batches need to be bottled for about 6-7 months. However, add a little sugar to the mixture and stir carefully to see if it is ready to be bottled.

If it produces foam or bubbles then the mead is still germinating. Then cover the container with a lid and wait a few more days. If you hear the sound of freezing then it is still germinating.

When your mead is ready, choose a beer bottle with a new lid to bottle it. And wait, leave it that way for about 6 months to 1 year.
